No pay hike, this man lives on Rs 70 per month salary

Jaipur: While many complain of a bad raise in these times of recession,
there is someone who has spent 27 years of his life earning only Rs 70 per
month.

Kailash Chandra who is a peon in a Rajasthan school can now finally see some
light at the end of a really long tunnel.

It is hard to believe but this grade four employee's salary has remained
unchanged at Rs 70 per month ever since he joined a government school in
Jamwa Ramgarh near Jaipur. But now the Rajasthan High court has asked the
Director of Elementary Education to explain how someone can sustain himself
on this paltry sum.

"The honorable court has expressed concerns about the how a person can live
and look after his family in Rs two per day. This is unfair considering the
seriousness of the matter the court has summoned the Director Education in
person" says Rajasthan High Court lawyer, Ameen Ali.
Kailash joined work in 1982. But after his services were illegally
terminated in 1991, he moved the labour court. While he was reinstated four
years later, his salary was never revised.

A report by the Central Statistical Organisation estimates the average
monthly income of an Indian has for the first time crossed Rs 3,000 a month
in 2008-2009.

A grade four employee elsewhere in the state, draws around Rs 10,000 per
month.

An amount Kailash prays he too will get with arrears!

"I have left it to God, and I'm holding on to doing this job hoping that
someday he'll listen to me and give me justice" says Kailash.

For the moment Kailash sustains his family through the efforts of his
younger son, who earns a decent wage under the NREGA scheme.

Kailash is due to retire in a few years. He hopes that fortune smiles on him
and at least his retired life would be a lesser struggle.
